Story Of An Explosive Aussie Opener- David Warner

by Kaison Francis

David Andrew Warner, popularly known as David Warner among all is a left-arm explosive opening batter of the Australian team. When he made his debut for the international side, he became the first player after 132 years who get a chance to play in the national side without the experience of playing cricket at a first-class level. Warner was also the captain of the Australian cricket team in the T20 and ODI formats for years.

Warner is a pretty well-known name worldwide because of his aggressive batting style at the opening position and he has been ruthlessly batted against top bowlers for years and continues to do so. From the years 2015-18, Warner was the vice-captain of the Australian side for the ODI and Test formats. In his entire career, Warner has been under several controversies but in 2018, the ball-tampering issue against him was the biggest for which he had been banned from cricket for 1 year by the ICC.

Records Of David Warner

Warner in his early days used to play for the New South Wales team and there he scored 197 runs from just 141 deliveries which remains the highest by any batter in Australia in the domestic circuit in ODIs.

Warner’s 311 runs innings against the Sri Lankan team is still the highest by any batter to score in the final match of a tri-series worldwide. He also became the only Australian to score 7 centuries in a single year. Warner is also the only Australian batter to achieve 1,500 runs in the T20I format.

Warner also holds the record of scoring 3 centuries at WACA in Australia, which no one has achieved to date.

Warner by nature is a pretty aggressive batter and it is no different even in test format because Warner has the record of scoring the fattest half-century in a test by an Australian in just 23 deliveries. 27th September of 2017 was a very memorable day for him as he became the first batter to make a 100 on its 100th ODI match.

Warner in his career has so many records but the most unique one is scoring centuries in all the innings of a single test match 3 times. The first was against the South Africans(135 and 145) in 2014, the second one came against India(145 and 102) at Adelaide Oval in 2014 and the third one was against the New Zealanders(163 and 116) during the summer times.

Warner is the 10th batter worldwide who scored the most runs in a single inning of a Test match, 335 runs not out against Pakistan in the year 2019 and this also made him the 5th opening batter to do so. He is the second batter worldwide to score the most number of 150 plus runs in the ODI format, 6 times in his career to date. Warner is 4th batter worldwide who secured 5,000 runs in ODI fastest, from just 115 matches.

Apart from several records that he has achieved so far in his career, one of the most notable ones is that he is the 3rd player worldwide who has been awarded the Man of the Match award the most in the T20I format, 4 times in total to date.

Awards Received By David Warner So Far

David Warner is only the fourth player who received the Alan Border Medal more than one time for consecutive years. In both 2016 and 2017, Warner has been awarded Alan Border Medal for his brilliant performance over the year. In 2017, Warner also won the Australian ODI player of the year as well.

In the 2019 IPL season, Warner won the highest award a batter can receive, the “orange cap” from BCCI as he was the highest run-getter in that season among all batters.

In the year 2020, Warner again received the Alan Border Medal and it is for the third time because of his extraordinary contribution to the team in the 2019 World Cup.

David Warner’s International Career To Date

Due to his sheer talent and aggressive batting style, Warner got his chance to play for the national side at a very early age. To date, Warner has played 138 ODI matches and scored a staggering 5799 runs with a brilliant average of 44.60 which includes 18 centuries and 26 half-centuries.

Apart from his aggressive batting style, Warner is a very technically sound batter. That is why his Test records are nothing less than extraordinary. From 96 test matches that he played so far, he scored 7817 runs with a respectable average of 46.52. In his 96 test matches, Warner scored 24 centuries along with 34 half-centuries with a career-best run of 335 in a single inning. It is rare to see Warner with a ball in hand but still, he manage to take 4 wickets in his Test career which can be a bit surprising for many cricket enthusiasts.

When we heard the name David Warner, the first thing that strikes our head is explosive batting at the top with huge sixes and lots of boundaries. His T20 records are also suggesting that. From 99 T20I matches, Warner scored 2894 runs with a blistering strike rate of 141.30 which includes 24 half-centuries and a single century which is very difficult to score in the T20 format. To date, his career-best score in a single T20I match is 135 runs.

Warner’s IPL Career

Warner started his IPL career in 2009 when he was bought by the Delhi Daredevils team(now Delhi Capitals). But in 2014 he was released by DD and bought by the Sunrisers Hyderabad team. In 2015 he was appointed as a captain and later he led the team to win their first-ever IPL trophy.

But in 2021 due to several controversies with the Sunrisers team management he again got released and in the 2022 auction, he was again bought by the DC team. To date, he is among the leading run-getters in the IPL of all time.
